John Doggett
Barbara Doggett
Name: Barbara (the ex-wife)
Current Residence: Long Island, New York
Hobbies: gardening
In the episode "Release" we see that her interior decorating
style is somewhat similar to that of Scully. It's very feminine,
clean and light.
According to the "Release" script, John and Barbara married
when they were young. It came as no surprise to her that their marriage
didn't last.
"I can't help him, Dana. We got married too young. After
Luke died, there was no pretending it worked anymore." -
Barbara (page 30, 9ABX16 "Release" (FINAL) 02/25/02)
From that bit of dialogue from the "Release" script it
is now certain that John and Barbara's marriage was not working
out even before the death of their son. Luke was the only reason
why they stayed together.
"I'll be at my mom's til tomorrow." - Barbara
This line of dialogue from the "Release" script tells
us that Barbara's mother lives in the Washington, D.C. area.
Barbara is "still touched by loss, but no longer in its grip."
according to the "Release" script. She has been able to
move on in her life, unlike her ex-husband.
In "Release", Barbara makes a comment about John and
Monica possibly being able to have something together. I think that
this suggests that Barbara may have been suspicious of John, during
their marriage, of being unfaithful. I say this because the only
real time Barbara would have been able to see John and Monica interact
was while Monica was investigating Luke's disappearance in New York
back in 1993. Perhaps something back then made her suspect them,
or perhaps a part of her mind was trying to find other ways out
of her marriage with John.
It's obvious from that comment by Barbara, that she knows nothing
about the friendship between John and Monica, especially Monica,
otherwise she would have been able to figure out that a relationship
between the two of them is absurd. Why in the world would a man
who has yet to get over the death of his son, fall in love with
the woman who was the head investigator on his son's case back in
1993 and was unable to solve the case which brought him so many
years of heartache and grief? I don't think there's any way at all
that John Doggett could look at Monica without thinking about the
worst days of his life. Barbara needs to sit down with him and do
some catching up, maybe then she'd take back what she told Scully
about him and Monica.
Of course you can also argue that she's just making it up to test
Scully's feelings towards her ex-husband. Barbara lives in Long
Island, NY... Doggett lives in Falls Church, VA... Reyes lived in
New Orleans, LA. Barbara only ever saw Doggett and Reyes interact
during the time Reyes was head investigator on Luke's disappearance/murder
case. She just said that to see Scully's reaction, to see if she
too has feelings for her ex. I think it's very likely that Doggett
mentioned Scully when speaking to his ex-wife, and perhaps in the
way Doggett spoke of her Barbara figured out his feelings and wanted
to know if Scully feels the same way. Watch Scully during that scene,
you can see a hint of jealousy in her expression and body language
when Barbara says that. |
